The Barn Restoration

Apr 7, 2022 | The Barn, Big House Renovation

As I start writing this article, it’s very windy in the mountains, and the unsettled weather spell is continuing this morning, prompting me to think about the barn restoration. Another project we need to start!

Currently a ruin, the barn will eventually be fully renovated to provide a rural retreat or short term guest accommodation here at Casa Grande.

But first we need to make safe!

The roof is completely collapsed and walls have been badly compromised due to years of exposed weathering and structural damage. Some tidying up of the site is urgently required to prevent complete collapse.

Update Apr 7, 2022

Much, if not all of the top of the barn is crumbling away. We need to remember that these ancient rural buildings were built with nothing but local earth holding together stone, slates and granite. Very impressive actually, but as soon as the tops of the walls and the earth mortar is exposed to the elements, the fabric of these building degrades very quickly.

Fear not! We’ll save you 😉

I’ve taken most of the roof off on one side today and made safe any falling stones fom the top of the building. One corner of the barn at the front is ‘looking’ very unstable. Although there appears to be no current movement under the weight of the rock, this will need stabalising before any other work on a new roof line can be started.
